Evening benediction

For those fighting for hope

Evening benediction
A peace rally at my mom’s little Episcopal church in New Hampshire

I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. Hopeful and discouraged at the same time, or maybe hope and discouragement are taking turns minute by minute. In any case, I tried to work through it in a poem. This is for all of you who are fighting for hope.

the powers

look, we are fighting a losing battle
the powers that be are too strong
we might as well go home, to live
to die, to love each other as best
we can, but if we can love, we can
fight, and if we can fight, then loss
is nothing to what we might gain—
look, we are fighting, we are loving
we are the powers that believe

With much love and hope,
Jessica
