On yearning

On yearning

I wrote you a poem. Okay, I wrote myself a poem. It’s me, hi.

Yearning
Jessica Kantrowitz
I know you, you know.
I can see that you’re never happy unless you want something.
The desire for something unattained or unattainable
is so much more fun than the having.

But what if something
you never thought to want
came to you unexpectedly—
and it was the best thing of your life?

Could you learn to live without yearning?
Could you be content with plenitude?
Scrape by on abundance?

Be glad for joy?

Or would I soon find you, again
scrabbling in the hard soil
dreaming of what you left behind?
